Rugs 101: How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Space

Lets talk rugsone of my favorite design elements that can totally transform a room. A rug doesnt just anchor a space, it adds texture, warmth, and personality. But I know picking the right one can feel overwhelming with all the sizes, colors, and patterns out there. Heres how I like to approach it:

1. Start With Size

The biggest mistake I see people make is choosing a rug thats too small. Rugs should ground your furniture, not float in the middle of the room. For living rooms, make sure at least the front legs of your seating are on the rug. In bedrooms, I like to size up so the rug extends past the sides of the bedit makes the space feel more luxurious.

2. Think About Function

High-traffic areas (like entryways or kitchens) need rugs that can handle the hustle. I love performance rugs here because theyre durable and easy to clean. In cozy areas like a bedroom or den, go for something soft underfootwool and natural fibers feel amazing.

3. Play With Pattern & Texture

Rugs are such a fun way to bring personality into a room. If your furniture is more neutral, a patterned rug can be the star of the show. On the flip side, if you already have bold furniture, a solid or subtly textured rug can balance it out. Dont be afraid to layer rugs eitherit adds dimension and a designer feel.

4. Use Rugs to Define Spaces

Especially in open-concept homes, rugs help create zones. A large rug under a dining table, another in the living space, and maybe even a runner in the kitchen can all work together to make the home feel connected but intentional.

5. Dont Forget Maintenance
