For years, my Christmas style lived in the world of gold and white. It was elegant, soft, and beautifully minimal, the kind of look that felt polished and perfectly tailored to my design aesthetic. I loved the glow of metallic ornaments and the simplicity of a neutral palette. But when I pulled everything out last year, something felt off. Instead of that spark of excitement I usually get while decorating, I felt… nothing. The magic wasn’t there.
That’s when I realized I needed a change. I ended up getting rid of all of my old gold-and-white décor and decided to go back to a traditional red and green Christmas. The moment I started shopping for red ribbon and fuller, more classic greenery, I felt instantly inspired again.
There’s something about red that just feels like Christmas in a way no other color can. It brings warmth, joy, and nostalgia all at once. The house started to feel less like it was styled for a photoshoot and more like it was decorated for real life. Red made everything feel cozy and alive, and it drew out that childlike excitement I hadn’t felt in years.
Switching back to traditional colors also reminded me how important atmosphere is when you decorate. I had been designing for aesthetics, but not necessarily for emotion. Red and green brought back memories of my childhood holidays, of sentimental ornaments, knitted stockings, and the kind of décor that makes you want to curl up on the couch with hot cocoa. It made the season feel fuller and more connected.
Letting go of my gold décor wasn’t easy, but starting fresh gave me room to create a Christmas that felt like home again. And now, every time I walk into a room, I’m reminded why traditional Christmas will always remain timeless. It carries a warmth that gold and white can’t replicate. Going back to red wasn’t just a design choice; it was a return to the Christmas I truly love!
Hope you enjoyed,
xoxo Jess
